Déjà vu anyone?! \nOn March 15, 1939, Hitler summoned Emil Hácha, the president of Czechoslovakia, to Berlin. \nAs he entered the Reich Chancellery, Hácha was ordered to sign a document accepting the occupation of Bohemia and Moravia by German troops. In the room, Goering added that – if he did not sign – Prague would be bombed by the Luftwaffe, which was in position and awaiting orders. \nStunned by Hitler’s presence and his yelling, Hácha had a heart attack; he was quickly given an injection that brought him back to life and, with what strength he had left, he signed. \nThen, waving the document hysterically, Hitler told his two secretaries, Christa Schroeder and Gerda Daranowski: “This is the happiest day of my life. What some have struggled in vain to achieve for centuries, I was fortunate enough to achieve immediately: the unification of the Czech Republic with the Reich. Hácha signed the agreement. I will always be remembered as the greatest German in history.” \nThe scene is recounted by Ian Kershaw, in his biography of Hitler. \nTwo hours later, the German army was crossing the border into Czechoslovakia. \nHácha was arrested in 1945, after the liberation, and convicted of collaborationism. \nHe did not get to serve any years in prison; he died a few weeks later, in June 1945.
