The Dunning-Kruger Effect ("Unskilled and Unaware") Research shows that people with low ability or knowledge in a specific area often lack the expertise to recognize their own incompetence. Because they cannot accurately gauge their own performance, they tend to believe they are performing much better than they actually are, often rating themselves as above average.
