In the dim glow of his rented basement apartment, Marc stared at the latest rent increase notice and whispered to himself, “Why is every square foot in Canada worth more than my future?” He scrolled through forums, government reports, and angry comment threads, zoning laws, all pieces of a puzzle that refused to assemble. Each explanation felt true yet insufficient, like a single brick pretending to be a house; the deeper he dug, the more the reasons multiplied without ever adding up to certainty. By dawn he closed the laptop, still ignorant, still paying, and still murmuring the same unanswerable question into the expensive silence.
