To summarize;\nCanada has not just clean but tasty tap water, significantly lower cost of living for the same quality of life, prettier women, better city planning, but the US has better airlines.\n\nYou would think all of those celebrities who cried about how they would leave the US to come to Canada in 2016 apparently couldn't even afford a plane ticket out of there cause none of them left.

SOME major cities cost more, others cost substantially less. Most southern states have WAAAAY cheaper housing than here in Alberta. I can go to Corpus Christi and pay $300k for a house that would cost me $800k here. The US has massive diversity when it comes to cost of living city to city, state to state.

I mean one pro of being in Canada is if you are depressed they'll just offer you MAID. Can't get that here in the US. Even in OR where they have the assisted self oof-ing, I can't get it because of some weird reason like I don't have a terminal illness. Would have to move to Canada for 5 years to get MAID though. Fortunately, in the US, we have tons of pain meds and boom-boom sticks. Combination of those 2 should do it for me.

It's cheaper to live in Dallas Texas than Montreal, which is one of the cheapest cities to live in Canada, so I don't know where you're getting lower cost of living (and yeah I heard you're trying to compare apples to apples, but this is impossible and honestly, wtf would someone want to live in a crime ridden city like NYC? The worst part of the US is the public transport by far. Like you said, except for NYC, there is just no way. I was staying in a city north of Pittsburgh by 40 minutes and there was no direct bus to either the city or even the airport just 20 minutes away! By buses, it would have taken 3 hours. When I did take the excellent 28X bus from the airport into the city, no one was on it except for 3 other tourists and that was a great bus, passed through the whole city. LA was ok, but no one in richer areas takes public transportation. Chicago was passable. AND yes, Preach, I ALWAYS get sick from food in the States. Even the same thing at the grocery store tastes different. So salty and Yellow No.5 is still a thing. BUT I love Trader Joes LOL

WHen my daughter was born in Toronto, Ontario, with a few complications, emergency C-Section, 4 days in hospital... in the US it would have been $100 000. I'm a independent contractor, I don't have insurance . I'd have been financially ruined. \nInstead I paid $20 per day in parking. I’m traveling rn, so I talk to a lot of internationals about the pros and cons of American. The greatest pros would be we are definitely the land of opportunity, so if you want make a lot of money there’s no country better. The people also have this optimism about the future that’s not as prevalent around the world, and the country is very diverse which means you can find a state that matches you want. However the downsides would be the stark wealth inequality, and lackluster healthcare. The polarization between the left and right, and the crazy urban sprawl which you never get used to.\n I think the inequality is due to us having this bootstraps mentality when it comes to success. Whenever I tell other Americans how lucky I am they’re quick to say that it’s all due to my worth ethic, but life is a lot more nuanced. Regardless I still love my country, and can’t see myself living anywhere else. ??

I have family in Miami and that city is such a contradiction. Florida has one of the lowest per hour wages in America, yet Miami is one of their most expensive cities to live in. My sister works a salaried Florida State government job as a supervisor which would pay 6-figures in Canada, yet is only $40,000 there. That is considered a good wage there. Beyond the glitzy beaches, the poverty is nuts. But yes, America has us beat on flights! I can fly round trip to Miami, from Toronto, cheaper than to Montreal.

You did miss the one important issue and that is health insurance. I think you did a good job of discussing he issue again and were genuine with your opinions. I went to montreal in 1990 and it was great because it was like Europe and so french and unlike the US. I dont know what it would be like to live there but for vacation it was fun. And i think it is obvious because you both have money now the us Healthcare system is superior to Canada. If i dont have money for health insurance, i would love Canada for being free. But if i have serious illness, the us is superior.

Having been born in NY and raised in Toronto for 13/14 yrs I agree there are pro/cons to living in both. I would say that quality of life is much better in Canada. Being Jamaican I appreciated the concentration of the Caribbean diaspora in Canada. From my perspectives different cultures are tolerated in the US vs accepted in Canada.

As a native New Yorker from (NYC), whose lived in the north part of the state near the border between Canada and the US. Who would visits Ottawa and Montreal frequently, I enjoyed every time I went up north. The “ruff women” are in NYC. They’re a product of the environment ruff city ruff people, everyone is always in a rush and with an attitude. The water in both Montreal and Ottawa is amazing!!! Both tap and from the bottle. I felt safer walking at night in Montreal and Ottawa then in NYC which is hilarious.

I'm a born and raised Canadian, but my friends and my fiancé are all from the USA, so I've got a firsthand look at the differences in our cultures and countries.\n\nOne thing I'll say right off the bat, I think a big part of what makes Canada work the way it does, is that we have such a small population compared to the USA.\n\nCanada only has around 35 million people, but there are some states in the USA that have over 40 Million people on their own. \n\nWhen you have that many people crammed together in one location, all fighting for jobs and housing and food and everything, it makes sense why you might have a culture that's a lot louder and self serving, because you have to compete with millions of people if you really want to make something of yourself.\n\nMy hometown of Edmonton Alberta, for example, we had a population of just 500,000. And I think the laid back attitude that a lot of people have in Canada is a product of that. \n\nThat's a big reason our crime levels would appear lower as well, because there's just a lot less of us.

I think this is a very Montreal centric view - public transport, safety and cost of living in montreal is honestly the best in Canada. Definitely not true for other cities (I live in Ottawa for example - COL and Public Transport are both pretty terrible here)\n\nBut I definitely would live in Canada over the US lol, as soon as you cross the border you can tell you’re not in Canada anymore

If I had to choose between the US and Canada, I would choose Canada. Canada I think is generally viewed positively in European countries, but the US is often seen as a basket case.

Well the governments of Canada have made it illegal for us to express our views. As a white English Canadian I don't think most of us hate people because they came from abroad. If people came to Canada and actually became Canadians I don't think 90% of people have an issue with that. The problem is people are coming here and are not assimilating. Especially the people from Asian and African nations. But this is not surprising to me because their culture is so different from ours. I would prefer immigrants came from northern Europe especially the British Isles and France due to having a shared history, values, and culture similar to Canada. \n\nThe other issue is mass immigration mostly only benefits wealthy people because they get cheap labour. People coming from countries with a much lower standard of living are used to earning less and living with less so they depress wages for working people here. The so called skilled immigrants that our government tells us will solve all of our nations problems are not. No one recognizes their skills here so they end up taking jobs away from other Canadians. \n\nI think Canada's solution would be to stop relying on foreigners and invest in Canadian people. I would cut immigration levels by 75%. I would limit immigrant applicants to make up only 5% from one country. Also we should only allow Canadian citizens to own property. Dual citizenship should be eliminated. You should only be loyal to Canada. \n\nThe government should also stop spending money on Black lives Matter, criminals, drug addicts, and other socialist non-sense. Government spending and taxes should be cut in half and free enterprise should be encouraged. We should be using money towards infrastructure and education. We should be training Canadians to become engineers, doctors, and skilled tradesmen. I would rather invest in our own people that try to accommodate foreigners.

I'm from the US and visited Toronto back in September. I really enjoyed myself and my hostel was by The University of Toronto. I would have LOVED to go to that School...but now I will wait until I get a travel assignment when I finish school. This is insane!

You are very biased. For some owning a gun might be more important than having gov. decide if you should. You also didn't look at weather and geographic variation which US would win in no time. What about infrastructure, travel, and food cost, cost of living in general? US would take all of those. What about pension systems (Canada might be ahead on this one)? That lame half a point is just that, it's lame. US has some real sore spots: racial tensions, healthcare, weak labour laws, inaccessible higher education. But we pretty much get beat at everything else and I am Canadian.

Whilst I agree with some things you mentioned, let me know where it's better than Canada. I lived in the US and it was no better at all. It was work work work with no life and not much family time. Only very rich people in both Canada and USA don't pay much taxes because of the loopholes. The CRA and IRS mostly go after people who are struggling to put food on the table. \n\nI had a major operation that cost over $350 000,00 in Canada. I don't even know what I would have done if I was in the US with shortfalls, many people go bankrupt due to medical expenses. I am grateful I didn't pay anything. The health issues you mentioned are everywhere due to covid that has ravaged systems in most countries. I would still take our medical system over the American system without a second thought. Though I would be in favour of a parallel paid tier that's integrated with the public tier so that the public tier benefits from the profits and investments.\nRegarding financial technology, the perspective here is slightly short sighted, although to some degree, I agree. Compared to the US we have had debit (Interac) at retail point of sale since the late '80s/early '90s, and email money transfers (Interac eTransfer) since the late '90s/early '00s, long before the US had anything comparable such as PayPal, and apps like CashApp or Venmo effectively have no marketshare in Canada because of the long history of having email money transfers.\nLastly, for the cell phone plans, you are 100% correct, though we still don't have true unlimited, and only on plans including 5G service. However, there are some mitigating factors such as the high ratings of the network quality and stability for all major cell carriers despite wide swaths of our geography having little to no population and rugged topography. It's not an easy country to cover properly or reliably without it being expensive. Though Canadian telecom and cableco profits are through the roof, as are those of the big 5 banks. We definitely need more competition, though I'm not sure foreign companies coming in are the way to go with this.\nAlso, technologically speaking many important technological and scientific R&D is being conducted here and innovations are made here all the time, but in many ways, these companies get traction outside of Canada long before they get traction here.

Did someone pay you to perpetuate the LIE that Healthcare in Canada comes out of people's taxes? That's certainly the impression that you have created. BE CLEAR. Each Province has its own universal healthcare which is funded - NOT BY TAXES - by a premium paid similar to regular insurance (except there isn't anyone skimming profits off the top). For example - the Ontario Heath Insurance Plan - OHIP. As a pensioner, my OHIP premium in 2014 was $98 per year. In the US I pay 12 x 167 = 2004 - over 20 times the amount AND I have to pay the first $4,000 of cost myself. Yes, you have to WAIT after moving to Canada before you get full coverage. As a Canadian, if I came back to Canada I would have to wait 6 months before my health insurance kicks in. BUT if this were not the case sick people from all over the planet would flock to Canada for free medicine. As for the Doctor shortage that is CREATED by the Canadian Medical Association limiting the positions available in Med schools. Nobody loses their house and goes bankrupt in Canada because a family member gets sick compared to about 700, 000 Americans per year who suffer that fate. AND no children die in Canada because their parents didn't have Healthcare. As for immediacy of service - it depends on how serious the medical problem is. Few, if any, people die in Canada because they were seriously ill and were told to go home and take Advil.

Most, if not all, immigrants have gone through rigorous English proficiency tests from reading, writing, speaking. Likewise most of the immigrants have high educational backgrounds, so they’re definitely proficient in English. They may not have the native speaker accent (just like yourselves) but I highly doubt they could be regarded as not being proficient in the English language. What’s the big deal about the English language by the way? among all of the languages, it’s the easiest to master. So I highly doubt that’s one of the real reasons. It’s more on the stupid “not having Canadian experience” thing. Which is really doesn’t make much sense. How would you expect most immigrants to have Canadian work experience? This backwards thinking is among the reason why Canada is lagging compared to other global countries. Only Canada has this rule. That way, it’s limiting its chances of getting the best talents from every part of the world. Because of this rule, highly skilled immigrants are forced to work jobs that doesn’t require technical skills just to pay the bills, until they got fed up for not being able to get jobs according to their high skills and eventually leave Canada for the US.

I came from the US and attended a well known Canadian university, and even I had trouble finding a job. If I hadn’t been able to then all the money Canada spent subsidizing my education would have gone back to the US. But compared to these Punjabi students I had it great.

He moved on and left me and my child of 5 years old on the street but thanks to Canada, no one judged me, no one talked about me. I'm listening to hear how Canada is not a desirable place to live, bc I have thought it would be a better alternative to the USA. But it still sounds better than life in the USA, if even just slightly. ?\nSo far, I hear 30% taxes on income (which is same in the USA).\nYou have free healthcare, however you have to wait in emergency room for 8 hours.....we DON'T have free healthcare....and guess what? $450+ later, we have still waited 4-10 hours in the ER. \nHere in the USA, our cost of living is insanely high compared to a single and even a double income. Our lowest rent is $1,200 to live in low income surroundings. A rent around $1,800/month will bring you to nicer surroundings in an apartment, but still surrounding areas have crime. \nFood costs are so high, Gas is so high. We haven't bought new clothes for ourselves in YEARS, only for our kids. \nDaycare is $485-500 month per child, even before and after school care. \nHealth insurance averages $145/per person per month, not to mention car insurance which is required to drive. \nSegregation has improved here but is ever being integrated back into our society as racism is kept very alive, even as they constantly teach it in the schools. They say it's to teach history but I believe it is just reinforcing racist ways and thinking patterns. \nI don't blame anyone for wanting to return to the comfort of their own people, language and living and country. \nYou may have us with the cold/hot weather in Canada! \nI didn't know about the Canadian passport being so opportunistic for travelling. That's cool ? \nAs far as desired profession, there are many doctors and teachers that come here to the USA from other countries and are now working as a clerk in the dollar stores here in the US. \nAnd forget work life balance here too. Cost of living here causes so much disruption in our family life. Debt is revolving.\nMy fiance's mother comes from a country in West Africa. She longs to return. She calls the USA a place you come to be a work rat. \nBesides free healthcare, it sounds like USA and Canada are similar. \nOne thing I've heard about Canada is that the government cares about kindness, as well as the banks. I hear that people are generally more courteous in Canada than they are here in the US.
