I have been living in Toronto for more than 2 year now and in addition to their contribution to India, I have huge respect for the Punjabi/ Sikh community in Canada. Despite whatever derogatory comments the locals might have, reality is they are honest and extremely hardworking people. The seva offered to everyone at various Gurudwaras is just so emotionally overwhelming. Unfortunately, there is one section- mostly the international students who have recently arrived seem to be influenced by Punjabi pop music and try to emulate which looks absolutely cringe and stupid. The situation now is their stupidity gets recorded and posted on social media which has resulted in local stereotyping the entire Punjabi/ Sikh population as destructive immigration.

In my opinion Toronto and Canada has changed for worst and is loosing its so precious identity. The last 15-20 years our leaders have been protecting the speculators, importing indiscriminate cheap labor (who can leave in Canada with $15/h?), down graded the education and social system. All in name of a false justification of multicultural philosophy. I have seen similar situation progressing like that in other parts of the world and unfortunately there will no point of return. Look at Los Angeles and you will see Toronto's future. I feel sorry for Canada that I love and for our brothers that built this country.

A country, where health care and education are free, in not bad at all. The minimum wage may be low, but you won't have headache for receiving care you desercve when you fall sick. Unlike other fake big country Canada doesn't expose people to this challenge. Neither your kids won't have a mortgage of education on their shoulder after finishing college, which can skrew them up and jeopardize their credit in not finding a job to repay their loans; this is one of the factors that prevent an inividual from social mobility. Keep in mind, one will never have everything he (she) wants in life that has been never easy.

What were his goals before moving to Canada ?\n\nPeople need to realize a country like Canada will not give you wealth but will provide you a space for growth. Pricing is not a Canadian specific problem. Look at anywhere people actually want to live in the US, it's essentially the same. LA and NY are just as expensive as Toronto. Only difference is there's less people in Canada that live in rural states like Iowa where everything is cheap because there isn't major city for hundreds of thousands of miles. This is all part of late stage capitalism and our inability to see past the short term. Corporations eventually take over if we don't do anything about it and everything becomes too expensive. People stop having kids so the government needs to increase immigration to support what few social systems we have left. As the child of immigrants, i think this is a perspective a lot of Canadians are facing. I could never bring myself to leave, most people my age are the same. All your friends are here, the neighbourhood you grew up in is here and you're simply not cut out to go to where your parents originally came from (half of us come from parents/grand parents who immigrated) because the climate is probably 1000x different lol (I just know I couldnt survive South Asian/Middle eastern weather).\n\nI just turned 18 though so I haven't experienced the insane rent and stuff (as it's literally impossible for me to move out). Things will be better I know it, but the question is how long will that take? Id personally give it 5 or 6 years. We need to put a cap on immigration and just completely cut off the GTA from receiving any for a set amount of time (think 2 or 3 years?). We also need to amplify our construction industry (incentives/rezone some areas for development) and the government should start subsidizing urban development projects with an agreement that prices will be lowered, or offer money to people who are purchasing condos/houses (think iZev but for urban housing and not electric vehicles). \n\nAlso stop taxing us and simply start slowing down/cutting non-essential social services; a specific government program should be created that closes all of these at once for a set amount of time (think 2 or 3 years as well) and they'll be able to redirect the money to more important causes.

I live in Canada as a Kenyan and I have been here for sometime .I work as a HR/Payroll Specialist also certified in the field. The problem is not Canada , Canada is a very good county which I love and I am gland God gave me the Opportunity to Come and settle here with my family.. The problem with some people coming here is lacking of knowledge how Canada works .It’s system is very far from how things work in Dubai or Gulf countries. A lot people are thinking than you can just come and get any job even without proper papers or you can earn a lot of money and then build wealth quickly. Which is A BIG FAT LIE. The tax in Canada keeps you humble. That is how Canada funds it's high end life many admire and want to be part of. The more you work in Canada the more tax you pay and many don't know this, and it is one of the main reasons why a lot of people start to regrets, because they realize there effort of working hard is not paying as they hoped. Another thing in Canada is next to impossible to get jobs or rent a place without proper paper work, like work permit, It is not like USA where you can use someone else papers to work. the The main available jobs , easy to get , don’t pay much. And also the cost of living is very high in some provinces like Ontario and BC. They hardly recognize credentials from outside unless you came through a job offer. Also because a lot of things in Canada are paid by the government through taxes, like health care, education. Unless you are tax paper with (and I repeat) Paper work, you cant access the benefit, including thee free food available for the needy. \nMany people forget Canada is looking for people to work for them. Not to grow rich and leave. The system is meant to keep you working. Unless you understand how a system of a country works, one will continue to blame it. Let people get well informed and well educated first , before they jump in the river. And it’s not Canada a lone , but any country in the world. Also a lot of these media post about Canada are misleading. And there is also another trap called debt, a lot of people once they getting working, rush to but things they cant afford and it becomes a stress instead of a blessings.\nIf you want to live well and enjoy Canada . One of the top thing to do is, go back to school once you enter in it, get a good education and you will get a good job. Also give yourself time to adjust. REMEMBER you are starting from square one. You are not continuing where you left in Kenya or in the country you get from. Also, the general social climate is not as friendly as those in USA for example. Not many people are willing to help for free. The most jobs advertised in Canada are the lower end paying jobs, which a lot of people pay a lot of money to come for, just to realize the job they left behind was far much better than this, but no one told them that, just because it said $18 hrs and you converted it to your country and looked a lot, doesnt mean it carries the same wait once you earn in from here. The living expense are very different. The reality is, it is not where you are , but whom you are and determination knows no barrier. Anyone who will trust God for help, work hard/smart and be patience in life, they will make. It might take longer than they expect, but they will get their eventually.

I moved 26yrs ago from Kenya. I've worked in the social services sector in USA and I can tell you that I have seen poverty here on a level that most people in Kenya will never understand until the land over here. The mind control, plus debt, plus high cost of medical care etc keeps people stuck. I have surrendered completely and made my peace. Life is better for people who come straight from the village or they are escaping abuse etc. But if youre doing well in Kenya, I would just stay there. But remember neocolonialists have already made their way into Kenya and life won't be much different once they get their fangs into the system.

Agreed. I am a long-time Toronto resident. Rents and housing is sky high. The federal gov't has been pushing money into the economy at an alarming rate, and this now interest rates will be very high for the many number of years, pushing up housing prices and therefore rents. The TTC is unsafe, that is for sure. The Federal gov't has admitted too many refugees without any transition plan, and Toronto has had to pick up the financial slack. The pandemic smacked Toronto with a huge bill, and this was not funded by the province nor the federal gov't. The result is under-funding of Toronto's social and city services, and therefore its degradation. Until Trudeau starts funding his share of the load, until the provincial gov't starts doing the same, further cuts will be required by the City of Toronto gov't for many years to come. There is no possible way that the City of Toronto can support this many social and city programs. Quality must drastically degrade, and it has.

Good advise to your audience Lynn- that people should do due diligence research before thinking of hopping on a plane to any foreign country let alone Canada. Good education and commensurate skill set is what Canada is after. And do not coming here with the hope that govt social programs will bridge the gap to your success. The cost of living is up everywhere- rent has gone commensurate with increase in mortgage rates due to inflation. Ata sisi kimeturamba!

When you immigrate, to get any Govt service like a Driving License, School admission, and even a job, you need a social security/insurance number. That number is pegged on your entry visa. If you are a visitor, you have to convince the Govt why they should let you work? If you are a student, it is limited the number of hours you work. Any employer is obligated to employ only those with credentials. If you are coming for work, like Nurses do, employers will have done your paperwork. Green cards are one legal way to immigrate. If you have legal papers, you make your way around without issues. Cost of living varies on location. As for skills, you need them, get them over time. There are good and bad stories, even locals who mess up end up in crap like an illegal immigrant would.

Some Kenyans or Africans for that matter are born believing tgat to make it you must go abroad. Not everyone is ever lucky. And please do background checks. Some social media posts are not true. Some are made with the aim of getting more people to join these agencies. Work hsrd in your country. Another thing, even if you are an expert they still treat as an african not onenof them. Money isn't everything- we leave it here. But go see the world if you can afford....?

Hi Lynn. First of, I would like to say that I'm such a huge fan of yours. Since you started at Tuko and still following to date. You are an inspiration to me and so many people out there. I love and respect what you stand for and your work. I completely resonate with everything you are about. Second, I've lived in Canada for over 30 years now. I am Eritrean and was born in Kenya. Moved to Canada when I was about 9 and have lived here since with my family. I have to say that for us, Canada has been a God Send. It has helped us in so many ways, and we are so grateful for the opportunities and life it has given my family. From health care to schooling and job opportunities. We also cane here in 1989. So times and cost of living was very different than it is now. Of course, times have changed now, and the economy and standard of living have too. There are pros and cons to everywhere we live in the world. Everyone is different and has different experiences. There are various factors that may affect everyone's perspectives and experiences when they come to Canada, whether it was a long time ago or recently. Some factors could be, weather, economy, feeling lonely ( no family), language barriers, support...etc. Change is not easy at all and can affect t your whole emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. Social life here is also not like it us back home...just alot of factors. People here work and work to make it. My mom brought us here as a single widowed mom. My sister and I were very young. But she was determined to give us a better life and worked her whole life, and it has paid off. It depends on how you look at everything and what your goal is. My mother was determined and made it happen and has raised us on her own very successfully. She loves Canada and appreciates it for everything it has done for us. Everyone's experiences are different. You have to do your research before coming and come with an open mind. Overall... Canada for us has been a blessing. \n\nI hope that helps somehow. If wasn’t for Toronto we wouldn’t have Trudeau and the dumb NDP, who have propped him and liberals up for the last three years. \nThis is what you get, they ramped up immigration. It’s tripled since 2015 annually. Last year we had record number population growth, over 1 million and 90% of it was immigration. Flooding Toronto and major cities in Canada with immigration, no simulation. Just imagine we have a recessional, how bad it will get. Pushing all this liberal nonsense like legal marijuana, how is a more drugged out society help anything, euthanasia it’s become the fourth cause of death in Canada. No value for actual life but all woke nonsense, flood more and more people into country, cities become crowded and expensive. Quality of life goes down . There’s no social cohesion, there’s nothing that holds a society together when you just like a hotel.\nWhat will happen in a decade when 70% of jobs are gonna be going to AI and automation. What are we gonna do with all these people?.

I am 54 years old and raced in Toronto. Toronto is not a good place anymore but just last week I visited Ottawa for the first time and the capital of Canada was not any better, I was surprised by the amount of homeless sleeping outside not far from the Parliament building. What happens to Canada is beyond my understanding. An apt in my building was around 1300 for two bedroom and that now is around 2800 just past the pandemic. I can only say that corruption is one of the big players why Canada has become like that and the break-down of the social safety net. Pensión plan are very low.

We indians have mentality & habutal of living in crowded artificial & cosmetic & polluted social environments in India, they missing all such things in Canada, otherwise friendly nature open minded quality councious clean living people definitely love to live in Canada...India a highly flooded population country where above 50% population living like in hell, roads are heavily crowded with huge traffics & highly risky , crome is worst , same corruption is everywhere, so if any body go in to deepth of painful condition of India only than anyone can judge benefits of living in Canada.

Over a decade of conservative mayors and council who care more about cars, landlords, developers and the suburbs they represent, plus the drive to keep our property taxes low and stop putting funds into things like public transit, social services for homeless, and general services has really impacted Toronto - and not in a good way.

Most of these so-called 'students' do not speak any English. Right after landing in Canada, start survival jobs, 10-20 people share basement, buy used car and (and break every traffic rule); the most favorite pastime is to take selfies in front of cars and upload them on social media. While colleges and universities earn big money as tuition fees from these people, Canada suffers.

While I appreciate the spirit of your critiques of the city, I would say that many of the problems you’ve cited are the same ones in all North American cosmopolitan cities: the cost of living is too high, and social services don’t keep up with the population. If there is a city in N.A. not afflicted with these issues, I say give it time. People will start leaving the big cities for the smaller ones which are usually less equipped in general.

Came to Canada from Israel 25 years ago. That time, in 1998 Canada GDP per capits was 33% higher than that in Israel. Two years ago Israel left Canada behind. It is shame for Canada to be poorer than the very small country without mineral resources and without a single day of peace since 1948. \n\nI blame Canadians for that. Canadians love Socialism, which means nothing more than re-distribution of incomes by the Socialist governments. Socialism brings no equity but equal misery. \n\nAlso, Canadians love to pay taxes and have expensive real estate which they plan to use as a source of income during retirement.\n\nCanadians most of the time vote for socialists like Trudeau. \n\nThis is why I do not recommend to settle in Canada. This country has no hope in my view.

It's all quite sad. Cannot afford to have family downtown. Lack of social services. I'm afraid in Canada, there aren't many cities to choose from, unlike U.S, for professional careers. A flee to suburbs could be feasible but generally it's a steep learning curve on managing a house (which is $1.5 million CAD these days). Perhaps it's time to look at other countries.

Grew up an hour away from Toronto, and lived there between 2018-2020 while attending grad school. It was expensive then, and has only gotten worse. My friends that remain are afraid to taoe the TTC, and as you touched on even the nice neighborhoods no longer feel as safe given all the random crime. I work in community services, and so much of what we are seeing could be mitigated or outight eliminated with better funding for social services. It's been almost three years since I moved across the province, and although I love to visit, I could never move back eith the way things are now.

I am living in Europe now, but my application to move to Canada was approved last year after a three-year wait. But my cousin, who is currently living in Albany, upstate New York, told me not to make the move. He said it is a bad time to move to North America right now, be it the US or Canada.\n\nLiberal governments had destroyed both countries, he said, and the current Canada is no longer the Canada that I made the application to move to.\n\nBut the life in Europe now is quite depressing as well, cost-wise. Things are so expensive that I have to spend 40% monthly more to maintain the usual lifestyle than I had 3 years ago. I guess it is almost the same everywhere, except that homelessness is not such a huge problem in Europe since most European countries still have proper social system.\n\nWorse comes to worst, I'll just pack my stuff and head back to Malaysia, my wife's home country where I used to live for 8 years in the mid-2000s.

I think you highlighted the symptoms of Canadian social problems that’s being brewing for last 30 years. And it’s going to get worse unless the politicians take their head out of sand. While I identify and agree with the overall sentiment of this video, here is the problem Alina. As a somewhat successful tech person who came from nothing, I refuse to move out of a city to a culturally or globally lacking city due to “budget”. I tried spending time in BC and Nova Scotia in the capital cities. I could not spend more than a week in Saskatchewan. I can assure you that someone with decent skills and lifestyle would not be able to sustain their social and personal life, and mental health anywhere in Canada other than Toronto. If I spoke decent French, I’d say Montreal is a decent option. Vancouver is too lopsided as an international real estate haven, even though beautiful. So the problem is that Toronto is honestly the only city someone like me (and most my friends) would consider living in Canada, and we are all unfortunately being forced to move to the US. We are in our very early 30s so it’s still not too late to have a big move but none of us wanted to try out NYC or SFO much later than now. I hope things improve and we are able to move back to Toronto. But right now, unless you make $300k+, it’s impossible. And we are only able to make that money in the US (most of us). Crime has actually decreased as a proportion of population in Toronto (except for COVID years). And everywhere in the world is facing inflation and a tight housing market. It is true that Toronto has the housing market worse, but the other costs of living are quite cheaper than other countries in the world. Toronto didn't even make it to the 100 most expensive of 2023. You have to realize this is a worldwide issue. Not unique to Toronto. \n\nThe social services issue is definitely more specific to Toronto. They are not dealing with these issues properly.

Look at Texas and see how they deal with social matters. They are becoming alternative to states such as California and New York. Toronto is a great city to live. If you enjoy the quality of life Toronto provides. The nature, the parks, the diverse population and culture, and the beautiful people. Toronto is place for you. If you come to Toronto looking for social welfare, free benefit, free food and government handouts, then Toronto is not a place for you.

If an African professional from Nigeria regrets coming to Canada you that you've come to frozen outhouse that simply won't give you the opportunity to make your dreams come true. European immigrants that come to Canada end up going back home because the cost of living will overwhelm your income and maintain you in poverty. Only immigrants from the most destitute countries want to remain, but once too many of them congregate in a place the social environment becomes just the same as the place they come from. I agree with all of your points in this video. While I love this city and I’ve lived here all my life, there’s a lot of things I’m not happy to witness at all. Everything has gone downhill but it’s not making me want to leave T.O. I love almost everything about it but those social issues have just plagued it, even I’m not surprised so many people are moving out. I’d rather stay here and overcome those situations than move because everywhere else is so expensive Your opinions are transparent otherwise and yes, it might be the effects of post-covid.
