The cost of living in Vancouver is ridiculous. We have a household income that places us in the top 5% yet even though we live frugally we can only afford to buy an apartment. On the same wage in the states or Australia we would be in a mansion and living like kings

Canada is very immigrant friendly in terms of accepting immigrant to come yes but why ? well because immigration is a big business for this country who has not much technology export and in the same time is second biggest country in the world with population less then California alone . Somebody has to pay the rent and who is better then new comers cause they are well , new and don't know anything lol but after they come here with false hopes and everybody from all directions rip them off well , they loos all the savings and if they are lucky start working at Tim Hortons lol with high rents and cost of living lots of them choose to go back and I am not talking about people coming to Canada from very poor countries like all the Filipino's , for them working in Tim Hortons with minimum wage is a big achievements lol I am talking about people from middle class countries and above . Immigration for Canada is a big money maker and who gives a shit if they go back after a year or 2 , they already contribute to government's by loosing their money and working like a hors for couple of years and pay 45% taxes . Listen any country which is easy ( kind of ) to immigrate its because they need money and cheap workers . Can you immigrate to US or Denmark or any other European country as easy as you can to Canada ? the answer is no with very big N unless you have some thing they don't or need and that thing is not money lol

Its a big problem since professionals who earn a relative big income like doctors, lawyers and engineers end up moving to the US, where they can earn multiple times more after taxes and other general living necessities like rent are paid. Even bigger problem is that theses people are the taxpayers that pay more than they receive in services.\n\nThe local corporate leaders are a small oligarchy that influences policies to keep wages low while the cost of living skyrockets. Note that for the following example, I do not criticize immigrants, when you are here, you're one of us and in the same boat, and I'd fight side by side any day for a better future for all of us. The immigration minister recently announced that they will let in more immigrants in order to reduce the increase in wages, which did not even follow inflation. Its depressing and alienating when your job sector gets flooded by more workers when it already underpays and has hard competition for decent jobs.\n\nPeople are great no matter where they come from, but the policies makes coming here quite the scam. Its better than a lot of places, but the average canadian is getting poorer and poorer and the ceiling of success is very low too.

I invested $1000 US and purchased two Tokens at a fraction of a cent and had 200 Billion Tokens in my wallet (Token/Coin Birth). My business partner in Texas made the same purchase. Fast forward two months, he has $980Million USD in his wallet and I have $600 USD in mine (i was in Canada, My partner in Texas USA). All transactions were block chained and reported for taxation . Can you tell me why? \n\n\n\nBest of luck to you two young ladies, have a great and controlled life.

I have relatives there who moved to Canada in the 60's, 70's, and as late as the 2000's from the Philippines. I was fortunate enough to immigrate to the US in the 80's through sponsorship by relatives who immigrated to the US in the 60's. For all of us all of our reasons were the same - to escape poverty. We were all educated back in our native country the Philippines but we were still poor. When the opportunity opened for us to live in the US and Canada we grabbed it. We didn't care about starting from the bottom which we all did or paying high taxes, or loneliness. What mattered to us is that here we had to opportunity to build a better life for us and our family. All of us have done well because of the free education offered in both countries.

Nice summary of the main challenges. Reading some of these comments leads me to believe that if one is motivated solely by money, Canada is not a great choice for you as an immigrant. The number of commenters hoping to move to the US from Canada due to greater opportunities to make money while ignoring the real and substantial disadvantages of living south of the borders just emphasizes this. My family are immigrants from the US and we didn’t face the same challenges as immigrants from countries further afield but I do understand the differences between the two countries very well and can state unequivocally that moving to Canada was the best decision our family made. Lower crime, better health care (yes even with the wait times), a fairer system and a “boring” but sane political system more than compensate for the few extra dollars I would make south of the border. In terms of where better prospects going forward for children and grandchildren, with the looming threat of climate change, Canada wins hands down. Extra income means little if you have to spend all of it on personal security and health care deductibles. So if you are only motivated by top line items like gross annual salary, Canada might not be for you and you would be better off looking elsewhere and leaving that immigration spot open to someone who can appreciate the more balanced offering that a new life and future in Canada can offer.

My family came here from the UK in the 1920s. They were very poor there. When they got here they were able to get jobs and did a lot better for themselves. I am grateful that they stayed in Canada. The situation in England is so bad now I just can't imagine having to live there. I know Canada is not perfect and that there is a lot of work to do. We depend on immigrants to help us now in the same ways they helped this country when my family came here. Pmease help us make things better for all of us. Thank you.

One thing which have bothered me is that you always have some objection or problem with the Pakistani System which you experienced and yet you chose to RUN away from it, instead of fighting. I came here in Canada 12 years ago and got 4 professional job offers I choose one and moved to Windsor since then I am here in the same company and our company paid one million dollar to Islamic organization London after this incident , I never ever faced racism especially based on Islam even in ramdhan our company allows us to work flexible hours .... And respect our Halal food when there are parties arranged by company and my parents got immigration too ..so our family is reunited here ... Where by while working in Kuwait for 10 years and it was difficult to get family visa for wife even having a management position in a bank...

It is such a shame that follow Asians and even American Natives play such a role in perpetuating racism against African descent people, but I guess they have their issues of identity. French Canadians are native people of Canada and not just recent immigrants. French Canadians, especially Québécois, are a part of Canadian culture but their culture is also very different. Its the same situation with African Americans in the US.

There are illegals in canada but honestly I feel bad for them because they think it's like in the state where they are free to do what they want. Here it's very very difficult because everyone who is a resident has a medical insurance which is hugely important plus not a lot of places pay cash , unlike the US. Canadian immigration sucks. There is no control. I came as an immigrant and I witnessed many heart wrenching situations. Ghost immigrants and non resident Canadian citizens living in India, Dubai, Russia, Lebanon, USA, Israel, Turkey, HongKong etc. They barely lived in Canada, yet they have same rights like us, take child support subsidies, welfare, CPP, Old Age while we bust our a....s in the cold to pay taxes and build the Canadian system. Wake up.

Only thing I want to point out: College/University isn't really cheaper in Canada. The thing is US has a lot of high end Ivy League schools that have been around for centuries and you are basically paying extra to be able to put that school on your resume. In terms of the normal non rich folk schools its the same for cost as well as our community colleges. Also your scholarships are way higher in value than ours could ever dream of being.

Okay. A lot of people here have no clue how the immigration system works both in the US and in Canada. “He should just have come here legally”. Well, most of the time a legal path to emigrating to the US/Canada just does not exist, and its getting more and more impossible to be granted asylum. In the US you can’t just apply for a work visa, you can’t just apply for a green card. You got to be eligible to apply for it. For a work visa you need a job offer first, you need proof of income and most of the time the employer will have to prove they couldn’t find an American to take the position. To get a green card you either have to get married to an American, invest at least $500,000 or try applying for asylum (which is almost impossible to get nowadays). ALSO to apply for asylum you need to be either inside the US or at a US port of entry. Try to be less “patriotic” and more empathetic. People flee their countries because of war, violence, cartels, gangs, terrorism, etc. They are desperate and want to protect their families and have a better life. If you were in their shoes and staying in your home country put your family in great harm you would have done the same thing. People need to stop judging, stop being selfish and start leading with empathy.

Gold plated healthcare in Canada what a absolute fantasy . Our healthcare is truly abysmal if you are not part of the privileged class. In case you haven’t noticed people are dying on waiting lists and those with money go private in B. C. Or go south to the US or Mexico. I am currently in SanJose del Cabo doing physio after my back surgery . Public system wanted me to wait two years for same surgery and I had lost the use of my right leg. Yes close Roxam Road but please stop perpetuating the fantasy we have quality healthcare .

This is so frustrating. I spent twelve years in the apartment industry and went through literally hundreds of hours of Fair Housing Training. I was given test shoppers on numerous occasions, just like every other property manager I knew and I always passed with flying colors because I stuck to a script and said everything the same way, even with the same tone of voice, every time. It didn't matter who was in front of me, my job was more important than anything else and that meant absolutely no possibility of discrimination. Here in the US, management companies and even the individuals onsite can be held monetarily responsible if testers find them to be discriminatory. It is very disappointing to see property staff making such bluntly poor choices. We all know better in that industry. This is the 21st century, we should be beyond this.

My mother's background is ambiguous based on looks. She's actually English and Irish but she has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes and naturally tanned skin. It's very unusual for someone of British ancestry, but family photo's of Mum's family show the same colouring back to her great-great-grandfather. In Britain, as a blonde, blue-eyed daughter, I've watched my whole life as people treated her differently to other relatives. She's quiet, polite and her father was a police chief inspector, she strictly obeys the law. I've overheard people refer to her as a 'paki' and all sorts of derogatory things. When we went to the US, it wasn't better. They were rude to her until she spoke and then reacted with shock. Some admitted they thought she was Mexican. \nSo, is it any easier for her in Canada? When she visits me here, she is mistaken for an aboriginal. It isn't any easier for her here. And pettiness of it all. When they hear her accent, suddenly it's like she's their best friend. \nThe sad/funny thing is, often I can't find customer service more than half the time I'm out. When I'm with my mother, there is ALWAYS someone around to ask for help.

Canada has given asylum to lots of people fleeing countries in the midst of civil wars, those who face political persecution where it threatens their life or liberty. Coming from a place that's just really violent is not quite the same, I mean some places in the US are really violent e.g. Chicago, you wouldn't expect Canada to give asylum to US citizens on this basis.

In general: All people are biased, in some form and magnitude. This is something built into our DNA, from millions of years of evolution and experience, of meeting, living and/or engaging whit other people. The human brain, central nervous- and hormonal system have changed very little in the latest 20.000 years. The only thing we can do are learn or at least not act on our biased thoughts. On top of this, we have events in our lives, what we have learned from family, friends and people in our closest environment, political views/trends, our environment in general and personality treats which affects us all. What we can do to minimize this is first admitting to our selves what biases we harbour, and not act to the biases. \nThe thing is, we are all alike, but live, learn and/or act differently. We can treat people as we want to be treated ourselves and treat ourselves with the same principle we treat others.\n\n\nBe nice, treat people with the same respect as you demand.

In the US they force companies to hire minorities. In many cases the minority is less qualified but gets the job PLUS they know a company must have a minority and don't try as hard to make the owners/company a profit. To hire them you need to follow a lengthy process and then of course hire another minority that to often turns out to be the same problem all over again. And of course should they be black beware of the NAACP lawsuits.

What no one or hardly anyone is talking about is that Canadian citizens have the right of free entry into the US where they can stay legally for six months OR just disappear into the landscape. They also seek temporary work and the general public and the cops don't really know if they're allowed to do that or check that they leave after 6 months.\nThe US border presents no problems if you've got a Canadian passport to present upon arrival.\nThe same would apply to Muslim Canadians entering the EU.\nCANADA IS THE SOFT UNDERBELLY OF US IMMIGRATION POLICY..\nEVERY YEAR THOUSANDS OF CANADIANS TRAVEL TO ARIZONA WHERE MANY LEASE OR BUY HOMES.\nTHE US CALLS THEM SNOWBIRDS.. Muslims need to stay in their OWN countries and they can be happy. We don't want them because they are not and never will be, like the rest of religions.
