The immigrants who come here on student visa and do 3 jobs to survive are not a problem. Problem are those who pay big $ to come in. They are the ones who launder their money through Canadian real estate and make Canadian living costs rise. They use Canadian real estate market for speculation and live off flipping houses and condos. They did the same in countries they came from after they earned their money through smuggling illegal staff. Book Crazy Rich Asians explains it well.

Context:\n\nAround a year or two ago driving back home with some friends after visiting Niagara Falls, we were pulled over because my car’s headlights were off. I didn’t stop immediately when they turned their police lights on because I didn’t think I did anything wrong but did eventually pull over after realizing they were indeed trying to pull me over. \n\nAfter I pulled over, two officers quickly got out and one of them rushed to my passenger side mirror and very aggressively yelled at me, “why didn’t you pull over” etc. I was very surprised by his reaction and quickly explained that I was a fairly new driver (about 6 months of driving experience at the time). He went away for a few seconds to cool off and later apologized for his behavior (very respectable).\n\nMain Focus:\n\nNow, the interesting part is while the officer was cooling off, the other officer wanted not just my ID but everyone else’s’ in my car as well. I still to this day do not think that is normal, however, I haven’t been pulled over enough to confirm that. Anyways, some of my friends didn’t have officials IDs on them but they did have their student ID. The police wanted that as well. They took a long time to what I assume, conduct a very thorough check on everyone’s ID, making sure nothing is suspicious and everyone is from America. The whole encounter had to be around 20 to 30 minutes long, it was very very long. \n\nTakeaway:\n\nFrom what I experienced that day, I strongly believe that people were at least crossing the northern border around 1 year ago and most likely even earlier. There are bus services that go straight to NYC from Buffalo which is right across the border from Canada to the US. However, I’m not sure if you need ID to use those services. \n\nFor those who read this comment, use this information however you will, I hope it helps even just a little in making some sort of change. \n\nHopefully, there won’t be an increase on how long it takes me to get past border patrol to Canada and back ?. I also hope that our taxes decrease because too much of it are being payed for services to aliens when some of our locals are still stuck in the streets.

I'm Chilean. My sister moved to London bc of a job opportunity and lived there for 15 years, but after Brexit things started to go sour; my BIL's company offered to move him to Toronto. Off they go... they HATED it; the drab culture, the weather, the prices (higher than London!), the quality of the schools their kids go to, etc. I went there last year and, honestly, besides being obviously safer than Santiago, I found it a very boring city; much more than any other I've been to in the US, Europe and South America. Plus they are constantly complaining about the extreme protectionism, which means some things are hard to come buy or to order online, and explains the high costs of telecoms. Well, they decided it was too bad for them, so they're returning to Chile this year?‍♀️

High rent and crime are problems across Canada right now. Larger cities will be more strongly impacted. \nThe root causes are actually quite simple. It's from decades of downloading responsibility for many services until they ended up in the hands of municipalities who had no capacity to fund them, then made 2x worse by the disastrous immigration policy of just the last few years.\nIt explains all three of the problems you identify, unaffordable rent, high crime rate, and underfunded social services.\nSo these are not problems with Toronto, but at the federal and provincial levels. Simply repeating that there are plenty of better options elsewhere doesn't make it true, unless you can give specific examples. Other places likely pay less, require longer commutes, don't offer small size rentals, have even worse social support, similar crime rates, or some combination of all those factors.\nToronto itself isn't as bad as this video makes it out to be. The downtown core skews all the averages, yet all the reporting, b-roll, and examples seen here seem to focus on the core. Of course the reason why it's worse in the core is because so many people want to live there! But I'm not going to concern myself about people who complain that they can't afford to live urban lifestyle, to be a part of 'the scene'. There are plenty of much more affordable options within a 30 minute subway ride of the core. Well inside city limits. But your friends won't think you're cool, so... oh no!\nYes, rents are still too high outside the core, of course. But they aren't as ridiculous as this video suggests. The city is massive. Grow some humility and find a place to that you can afford to live, within Toronto.

Great decision. I would recommend moving to Turkey whether you want a busy and open minded city like istanbul or a quiet more reserved filled with nature city like Trabzon. When i go there, it feels like home, and i feel like i belong. I dunno how to explain. And as long as you have an outside income, you will be financially stable. I'm trying to go there myself as well. Best of luck!

Very interesting video, all was well explained. But the situation it's the same here in Europe, and maybe is even worse, in Italy you die of hunger! Salary is so LOW and never changed in more than 20 years, and rent of houses is crazy! It's insanely high and with your salary you can't pay the rent (even if you are a doctor, nurse etc..) you don't have money to buy an house and if you pay a rent you can't spend money on anything else. People here live thanks to their parents savings (who has this luck). The situation is very bad, young people can't find a job because there are no jobs available, it's really hard to live. Cities are dirty and degraded. In public health care you have to wait months and years for a visit, you are forced to go private and pay a lot of money. So I think the situation is serious everywhere. If you know a place where you are paid well and there are no such problems let me know.

You explained this so well!! My partner and I moved to Canada 3 years ago just as we got approved for H1B. We had to chose between moving to CA or staying there in an uncertain limbo for 2 decades waiting for a greencard. You did a good job talking about the downsides of moving such as a lower salary and higher home prices. We bought a small townhouse for the price we could have paid in the US for a detached house. Many people I know in similar situations leave CA and move back to the US once they get their Canadian citizenship. However, I do think that there are many reasons to stay such as the political climate. The US has become very regressive banning abortions, making gun laws more lenient and it’s not as accepting when it comes to diversity and inclusion (be it POC community or Lgbtqia+) unless you live in a big city which is expensive. These are the reasons we chose to stay, especially if we have kids as school shootings are getting more and more common there.

We are originally from Bulgaria but Turks and came to UK 10 years ago, we just bought our house 3 years ago, basically created everything from scratch. It is bot an easy task to start from the beginning again but I believe that if Allah maid to think about moving that means He will help you.\nAs a hijabi muslim woman in a community that there are not other Muslims around I can say I feel relatively safe BUT some days I notice the look of hatred in n some peoples eyes. The other thing my girl started to question some topics they have been receiving at school and it is a constant battle for me to keep explaining to her the right and wrong. More over she is listening for now but not sure for future and this scares me.\nAs you said praying and being a practicing Muslim is difficult here as well. We are Turks but do not have Turkish nationality but when we go for religious holidays in Istanbul I feel completely different, it just feels like I have to live there near the mosque. My inner me begging me when we are in Istanbul in the old part of the city to stay there forever. \nI really know what you feel and want. I am looking for Muslim countries where possible we can move BUT unfortunately I made the conclusion that there is not a place even in a Muslim land that we can live the way of peaceful practicing and being a Muslim what we want to be. \nJust advise be careful with the Arab world, other than that if you look at Türkiye I would say do your research really well, not in every town there you can live your religion. You have tried to explain very well the initial struggle faced by new immigrants. This does take years and sometimes decades to settle down properly in a new country for first generation. First generation Indians try to save as much as they can while cutting corners. Things have relatively become much easier as there are plenty of jobs for those who have professional degrees and substantial experience. I personally found Canadian bachelor of engineering was far superior than masters of computer science in USA. I enjoyed spending four years in downtown Toronto while full time studying in late 80’s before moving back to USA. Someone else mentioned here in previous thread that all of their friends are much better off in India. I feel more or less the same way in spite of having three engineering degrees and 40 years experience. I am strong believer in Karmas, your destiny will take you where you’re supposed to be. Canada is quickly turning into a 3rd world country because that’s where the majority of them came from, as refugees NOT IMMIGRANTS. Canada is no longer screening for EDUCATED, PROFESSIONAL people who can contribute to Canadian society. Canada has made it so difficult for those who are educated and are professionals to receive accreditation to contribute to Canadian society. Canada no longer ensures there is a Canadian sponsor who pays for the immigrant, to ensure that the immigrant is not a burden on society. When teachers can not make change while volunteering at a food stand for a local craft show, this explains that our education system is junk. Our health care system is run like a well oiled corporation where money stops at the top/administration and never finds it’s way to those who need health care. I was the first generation of latch key kids to go to school with Italian, Croatians, Serbians, Armenians, Jews, Palestinians, Asians and we never saw our classrooms full of sanctioned hate. We never saw the neighbourhoods of any of these ethnicities look like open toilets. There was no gang violence amongst these ethnicities. They had their own community centres, churches, synagogues and anyone was welcome. They were active in the community, they were fantastic neighbours. Decades later we have “no go zones” in our cities and rural communities because of the danger of some ethnicities. Churches and synagogues are locked. Their community centres are locked and monitored for entry. We have lost our way. We have allowed chaos agents into our country and we are paying the price and will continue to do so.
