I left Canada 3 years after I got the citizenship, because the cost of living was unbearable. I was living in 1 bedroom condo in Vancouver (Canada), with no cars or investment. In 2020 I found an entry lvl job at Amazon Seattle (US). My pay doubled, tax reduced by 50%. Sold my Canada condo, and bought a single family home and a car in Seattle. Perhaps I will not name the most popular destination for relocation, but I suggest coming to Russia, there are many positive reasons for this (I take Moscow as an example):\n1) Affordable housing with reasonable prices. The price for a one-room apartment in Moscow, for an apartment with a good renovation will cost you about $500 Plus utility bills with the Internet will be 50%. The current clinics look like Cyberpunk 2077, seriously. In the regions, unfortunately, it is completely different. In December 2023, I was hospitalized with double pneumonia, and I didn’t pay a single ruble for treatment.\n4) Security. You can calmly walk around Moscow at night and not be afraid of anything. There are cameras everywhere in Moscow, on shops, on poles, and video recorders on cars. In general, if you are a good person, you can forget about this word.\n6) If you receive a residence permit, education for your children is free. Our state generally cares excessively about children. And I still remembered! Summer holidays for children are 3 months, so where should they go? Summer camp, give mom and dad a break from your nasty whims))\nIf you want to send them to the Black Sea, if you want to send them to Altai to a health center, you can send them to a city camp (They brought the child in the morning and took them away in the evening). Previously, I was constantly sent to the black sea on a permit that was given to my father at work (Shipyard). Now this is only possible in special cases.\n\n7) Vacations. You are required to go on paid leave for 28 days a year. 12 public holidays.\n\n8) Sexual minorities. As a realtor in London, I agree that we feel the pressure on our rental market. Rent has increased dramatically in the past 5 years. Growing families that rent are choosing to live with less space and stay where they are to keep costs down. rents could more than double by going to a new home (depending on how long they have lived in their current hime and the larger unit they will then move to.) I love our international students and support many of them find housing, but it doesn’t take away from the crisis we see. Since Covid our homeless population has exploded along with surrounding communities like St. Thomas and Woodstock.

Ok so this isn't going to be very popular... but let me posit a hypothesis: the rising housing costs might indicate that the city is doing something right, because people are willing to pay more to live there. Supply and demand, right?\n\nI bought a couple of condos within last 10 years. They nearly doubled in value. I'm renting them out at 2300 and 2400/mo; used to be 1500~1800 only a few years ago. They're paying for themselves and then some. It's amazing. Things are great from my perspective.\n\nIf enough people decide that the current housing price isn't worth it and move, the prices should come down. I doubt it'll happen though. In 2007, my yearly gross income was double what I paid for my home. Now my home is worth double my income. My income is still the same amount in 2023 as it was in 2007. Food has increased 30% alone since 2021. So you can see Canadians were rich in 2007 compared to what today's cost of living is.

This is all true. It's impossible for most people to buy a home now, especially with Chinese and Ruzzian money laundering in the housing market driving prices out of touch with reality. The health care system should change its name to human plumbing operations department so people don't get too optimistic about their chances of survival. Traveling, from local transit to airline, is double any other country I've been to. What's missing? Oh yeah, Winter!

I find it so weird when they ask for Canadian experience when you just came to Canada I blame the employer they make it difficult for people to get hired and in return people leave to find a job in a different country I did the same thing came to Canada to look for work working in IT and I didn’t get IT job because I did t have any Canadian experience. After two years of working at a job that was not even what I studied I left Canada and found a job that I studied for I got a good job in America Long island New York and never looked back……. I get paid double then I would have if I had gotten a job in Canada any way ….. forget Canadian experience it’s not worth moving to Canada the country has changed. You pay more for everything in the states you get things for a lot less . Car insurance in Canada is so expensive……… do t get me started on the winter ?

I moved out of Canada in 2023 due to the high living costs, after nearly a decade. Taxes are super high as you start making a bit more of money, healthcare is precarious (talk about preventative medicine… non-existing in Canada) and the real estate market is just the cherry on top. Making 200k plus I couldn’t buy a condo anywhere for me and my wife without accruing a lot of debt, at least a 2/3 bedroom as we both work from home. Even cities like Calgary, known before for cheap rent, have doubled the prices. \n\nToronto and Vancouver are blatantly used for money laundering and the government doesn’t care. Prices as a result have super inflated and people doing any type of decent work are the ones to pay for it. \n\nCanada is amazing if you are either VERY poor or VERY rich. The rest is better off moving elsewhere

I can understand why people want to leave or not come to Canada, weather, cold weather can last up to six months and the summer isn’t always that great. Another reason, taxes…. Canadians are taxed to death here, you are taxed on everything here and if you make good money and aren’t paying enough taxes, you could pay a good chunk come tax time. Job market sucks, there are lots of jobs but these jobs don’t pay the greatest. Cost of living has skyrocketed over the years and in my personal opinion, since Justin Trudeau has been PM, everything has doubled in cost, so many people are struggling, many young couples can’t afford a house, rent has been on the rise over the years and so many people rely on the food banks, the highest it’s ever been in Canadian history, crime has gone up and drug use has also gone up and oddly enough, ever since Trudeau has been in charge and I’m sure some will disagree with this but Canada was never like this before Trudeau.

They show a lot of grocery stores when they talk about monopolies, but it’s in everything. When I was getting my internet set up I found out only one of the two main companies in Canada is provided for my area (they do this on purpose). So I pay over $100 a month just for internet. And literally have no other cheaper option other than living with no internet. (I’m in a small town so there aren’t even any cafes or anything to pop into). And live alone. Another thing, we’ve got a big country, and I live in a rural community, so most of my colleagues drive at least 45 minutes to get to work, one way, because they’d rather live in the city. And this is NB so you can’t take public transportation like trains to get here, you’re driving on the highway to get here. Since the pandemic houses have more than doubled, I did get a raise, but it was I think 4% over the last three years. So cost of living is definitely increasing at a much higher rate. Before the pandemic I could buy a week of groceries for one person for $60, now it’s more than $100 for a week easily, and that’s with looking for bargains and reducing the amount of meat and fresh produce I eat. It can’t keep getting worse, because people already can’t afford it, so something is going to have to change before everything breaks completely.

Trudeau says he is working hard for Canadians every day. The evidence disagrees:\n- carbon taxes hit every item purchased or service required to live; housing, food, fuel etc. etc. Do you really believe 8 out of 10 Canadian families get more back than they pay in?\n- Trudeau promises to make housing cheaper but fails to recognize that the Immigration Invasion is a contributing factor\n- Trudeau says the gov't will borrow so Canadians don't have to. Evidence shows that consumer debt levels are the highest in the G7. His reckless borrowing has doubled federal debt and created a 40 yr. high in inflation. Mass immigration causes taxes to rise, gov't services to decline. Inflation, rents, and mtge costs rise. Is PM lying?\n- An immigration invasion pushes wage levels down and inflation up. Why won't PM talk about this\n- one in 4 Canadians has to go to food banks at least once a month. Meanwhile Ukraine gets $9 billion in Canadian aid for yachts while Canadians suffer. How is this helping Canadians. \nIf you believe Trudeau's rhetoric then if you are better off now than 8 yrs ago. Ask the truckers if you are more free. Wake up folks.

Australia is much the same. Housing very expensive. Wait time for an ambulance can be an hour and then further wait outside a hospital. Just two big supermarket chains. Just four big banks. Incompetent government projects where costs blow out to double after being started. Interest rates rising but inflation still rising.

This is very true. Living in Canada means paying more for pretty much everything except healthcare than Americans. Just groceries are close to double US costs, as well as gasoline and telecommunications services

I've been here for 12 years and I'm moving to the US next month. All my friends are gone, anyone who has that possibility is leaving. Not only leaving the city but leaving Canada. It's absolute insanity how everything has collapsed over the past 3 years. You see influx of Indians everywhere because I guess they are the only ones still willing to move here.\n\nFurthemore, the unemployment and recession are mindblowing. The salaries are the same as they were 5 years ago and the cost of living doubled.

1) Toronto is poor value. Getting housing of any kind (buying or renting) is stupidly expensive. And the quality you get for the price is lousy. Especially the newer builds, which are just thrown up as quickly as possible and sold to investors. Policy measures generally all seem to serve to just inflate the price of housing further. The occasional lip service given to affordability is amusing, but ultimately sad. There are lots of people who really do not want the housing bubble to pop. They will fight against it with all they have.\n\n2) It has become kind of boring. There is lots to do if you have money, but it’s harder to find entertainment on a budget. Even the free stuff like parks are filling up. Stuff like sporting events, eating out, going out is very costly across the board. Even the “cheaper” stuff is expensive. It seems like a lot of local culture is disappearing. Even the cool neighbourhoods are filling up with the same chains. I think the high commercial rent and bureaucracy is deflating a lot of would-be entrepreneurs. Most landowners seem to just be banking on cashing out their land for condos.\n\n3) Canada overall has a high cost of living compared to salaries. In the US you can find lower cost of living areas that still give you a real city experience. And in Europe you can be poor but still live a decent, if no frills, life. In Canada the basic necessities are all expensive. Phone bills, grocery bills, rent, insurance are through the roof. Domestic travel is expensive. And the dollar sucks if you want to travel abroad. Health care is free but good luck finding a family doctor or waiting 8 hours in the ER these days. It’s expensive to be poor, or even middle class.\n\n4) Most of the Greater Toronto Area, outside the core, is soulless suburbs with awful transit - very “American” except with worse traffic congestion. You will need a car, which is another huge cost. Row upon row of old cookie cutter suburbs with the same crappy houses. Good luck walking anywhere, and if you do you will need to walk down boring, treeless arterial roads with cars zooming past right beside you, and cross giant eight lane intersections that were never built for humans on foot. In a rainstorm or on a fall evening you have to be really careful not to be run over by aggressive drivers.\n\n5) It is hard to raise a family in an apartment here. You can do it but it’s not very easy, and also you are still kind of judged for it. Lots of young people are feeling stuck and are deferring or avoiding starting a family. Buying any type of house, even a basic townhouse, requires pledging your soul to a bank by taking a massive mortgage with eye watering debt in a volatile market. But few apartment buildings have the kind of sensible gentle density, the family unit sizes and the common amenities, like little courtyards with jungle gyms, that you might find in Europe. No one ever contemplated that anyone would ever desire to raise kids in an apartment. It’s just a cultural thing that has worked its way into how things are planned and designed.\n\n6) The transit system is ok by North American standards but awful by international standards. There are only two real subway lines, one stub line, one line that is permanently out of service after a derailment, and another line that was supposed to open a couple years ago but still has no date for opening. The subways go out of service frequently, sometimes for the dumbest reasons, and then it is a zoo of shuttle buses. The streetcars are nice but so slow. The buses are fine if you find yourself dreaming about riding a daily herky jerky rolling tin of sardines. They are building a lot of transit but it will take decades to get done.\n\n7) There is still a lot of cool multiculturalism and opportunities to experience different foods and cultures - one of the best things about Toronto. Increasingly though it seems to be losing the fun vibe of the 90s, when everyone celebrated each other’s backgrounds and was chill. It seems the immigration is not as broad based anymore and also people are importing a lot of their “old country” grievances here. The immigration system also kind of preys on people abroad by selling them a false fairy tale, so they end up dejected when they arrive and see how things really are.\n\n8) This one might be controversial but it’s kind of an ugly city. There’s nothing particularly of historical meaning or value. Some of the older neighbourhoods are kind of nice, but the last 25 years they have only built giant glass skyboxes, one after another. There aren’t the cool “missing middle” walkups like in NY, Chicago or Montreal (or even LA). There are very few buildings with much architectural character. Some of the buildings they deem “heritage” here are an embarrassment.\n\n9) For safety, honestly on this score I think Toronto is not bad. There are not too many real “ghettos” and it’s night and day compared to much of the US. With that said, there is more vagrancy and social issues these days, with tents and such. It’s very sad but the shelters are full, lots of homeless go into the libraries, parks and transit system. It does make it harder to enjoy these public amenities safely. It is nowhere close to Europe where you might let your kids run free around town. Canadian parents still helicopter their kids and the place again is not designed to really be safe for kids, in the same way as Europe.\n\n10) Finally, a bit of a double edged sword. Toronto had a lot of youthful energy - people coming here from all over. It is definitely not as sleepy as many parts of the world. With that said, it is becoming a bit of a transient place (minus the world class experiences like London or NY). If you are from elsewhere you might find it hard making and keeping friends. I’ve seen lots of people struggle because it’s is hard to build a strong social network. We have a very “shallow” culture here - people are extremely polite but not overly warm and hospitable. We treat one another kind of like neighbours - meaning we’d like to have a cordial, drama-free coexistence and otherwise kind of stick to ourselves.

And if you live alone in Canada you get depressed...\nAlso, if you live alone, the cost of living is double.\nAnd, 8 months of winter is crazy...\nSo, after 18 years of Canada... I leaved it for good

Citizens that were born here are thinking about leaving because of what Trudeau has turned this country into. With his blatant disregard for human and Charter rights, multiple scandals, ethics violations, conflicts of interest, corruption, the elimination of informed consent, propaganda and biased journalism, ridiculous woke ideology, crooked legal system, doubling of the housing market, massive increases in taxes and the cost of everything, homelessness and food bank usage at record highs, the educational system turned into crap, the list goes on and on.

The housing pricing in Canada are pretty insane. The value of my 900 SF condo in Victoria has doubled in the past 10 years. I don't know how anyone gets into the market today when you add in inflation for regular goods over the past couple years. I know it's become a hot button in parliament of late, and the government seems to be trying to spearhead more housing, but they are pretty late.\n\nI'm also a little surprised that a majority of conservatives don't think the immigration levels are too high. But I suspect that has gone down of late with the said housing issues. More skilled workers is better for Canada overall, and will generally drag wages up, but housing has to keep pace so costs don't escalate more than wages.

UPDATE: Halifax (NS in general) is now unaffordable and the salaries have not aligned with the price increases. Food, gas, and the housing market have essentially doubled in price (seemingly overnight) and the population more than doubled so there are new condo buildings built everywhere with rent averaging $2500+ per month for a 2 bedroom. A house that used to cost $300K, is now closer to $700K. For the first time ever, there are homeless people living in their cars or in tents. The only thing that has stayed the same is the beautiful landscape.

The US is the only nation in the free world that does not have universal health care. The cost per person for health care is double in the US than it is in Canada..Big PhRma is ripping you off!

I would bet everything I can afford that if those interviews were done today you'd hear a very different point of view. \n\nThe cost of living here is unprecedented. Everything in Canada is double the price after inflation. A 250k apartment USD is 650k in Canada (500K USD). You may need to pay for your health care, but at least you are allowed to get care as soon as you find the money for it. This is not an option here. If you are dying, and on a wait list, there's no way out. You just need to pray your surgery will still work once your name comes up in a year, two years.. However long it takes.

We cannot save people from other countries when we have our own people drowning! Our own veterans homeless! Our own people not being able to afford rent anymore! Our tax money needs to help our own people first. The day our people are doing well then we can help but until then we need to focus on our own. I cant even afford a home with my husband due to the cost doubling-tripling! And our health insurance is $800 A MONTH! Employee provided! We dont make 6 figures even so how is it fair they would get free medicaid while we pay hundreds. Its not fair.

In the 1960s in Canada we could buy a house for 1-3x the average household income despite most women being housewives. Since then the population of the country has doubled due to immigration and it now costs 6-8x the average household income to buy a home, despite that fact that barely any women are housewives anymore. Hello! When i came to Canada in 1997 the minimum wages was 8 dollars, and the cost of a home was around 200000. Today the minimum wages is 15 dollars, but he cost of a home is about 1 million which is 5 times more than 1997.\n The wages has only doubled. So you are telling me that Canadian people are doing better now than in 1997. People in this country are going backwards instead of forward. There is a total imbalance of wages and home prices.

I can't believe we're taking in Asylum seekers from the US are you kidding me? This Country is a mess it's lowest but our Government just keeps sticking us with paying for anyone wanting into Canada. We shouldn't have any homeless vets & why does Canada think we can afford more people? Our small house we worked for & had 2 children in won't be able to keep it because the cost of living & taxes keep going up. Hours being cut & not enough money to put away. Building supplies doubled after the pandemic. I can't find the medical help I need. God help us as our Government isn't going too. I'm listening to hear how Canada is not a desirable place to live, bc I have thought it would be a better alternative to the USA. But it still sounds better than life in the USA, if even just slightly. ?\nSo far, I hear 30% taxes on income (which is same in the USA).\nYou have free healthcare, however you have to wait in emergency room for 8 hours.....we DON'T have free healthcare....and guess what? $450+ later, we have still waited 4-10 hours in the ER. \nHere in the USA, our cost of living is insanely high compared to a single and even a double income. Our lowest rent is $1,200 to live in low income surroundings. A rent around $1,800/month will bring you to nicer surroundings in an apartment, but still surrounding areas have crime. \nFood costs are so high, Gas is so high. We haven't bought new clothes for ourselves in YEARS, only for our kids. \nDaycare is $485-500 month per child, even before and after school care. \nHealth insurance averages $145/per person per month, not to mention car insurance which is required to drive. \nSegregation has improved here but is ever being integrated back into our society as racism is kept very alive, even as they constantly teach it in the schools. They say it's to teach history but I believe it is just reinforcing racist ways and thinking patterns. \nI don't blame anyone for wanting to return to the comfort of their own people, language and living and country. \nYou may have us with the cold/hot weather in Canada! \nI didn't know about the Canadian passport being so opportunistic for travelling. That's cool ? \nAs far as desired profession, there are many doctors and teachers that come here to the USA from other countries and are now working as a clerk in the dollar stores here in the US. \nAnd forget work life balance here too. She calls the USA a place you come to be a work rat. \nBesides free healthcare, it sounds like USA and Canada are similar. \nOne thing I've heard about Canada is that the government cares about kindness, as well as the banks. I would never live in Quebec as it has the highest provincial income tax rate. The starting rate on the first 45K of income is 15%, that's triple Ontario and BC. Ontario is number one for me. If you live in smaller city, the cost of housing is bearable. It's starting provincial tax rate is just over 5%, much like BC. Alberta is only tax friendly if you are earning at least $100 grand but for lower incomes, their starting tax rate is double that of Ontario and BC at 10%. I have seen a few cost comparison websites by province and NONE that I have seen mentions provincial income tax differences, a major omission.

It's expensive everywhere this days. Actually I live in UK but I'm from Poland. Petrol now cost £1.45 plus! My rent is £1000 for one bed flat. Then add bills £1250. Then add petrol and car insurance.. I'm fucked end of the month. Living on credit card. Im a nurse and I earn £1800. I use to pay £200 for my small rental room.. I get paid the same as 10 years ago but everything else has gin up double! And my lovely Poland.. Its the same. I use to be able to have an amazing holiday there for £200 now £500 is nothing.. Don't worry prices rocketing all over the world. Shame that we don't get paid more! Because I like my job.
