Even though I grew up there, I moved out a decade ago and haven't returned!

I live in Ottawa, Ontario and grew up in a Canadian surburb and honestly I can't complain..lol \n\nActually, my parents have done very well for themselves. I know plenty of Haitians who have done very well for themselves too.\nMy parents are both retired enjoying life ??\n\nI live in a white neighborhood and never had any issues. I only had issues with black kids.\n\nCanada has a horrible history as well, especially with the Natives however, I'm still glad I was born in Canada ??\n\nI'm blessed to be able to work from home and make a six figure income.

I'm FBA and I grew up in Toronto from the 60's until today and I can testify to what this sister is saying! In addition, over the years there are very few black Canadians from the Underground Railroad or decendants of slavery in Canada still in Ontario area and more black immigrants from the Caribbean and African Diaspora that walk off the boat with disdain for FBA! Most of these black immigrants that I grew up with think they are better than FBA and play right into white supremacy with bigotry, discrimination and disrespect. So, I have reestablished my roots in America, but I draw my pension, from 30 years of social service work and my free healthcare in Canada! This is very surface-level analysis. If you want to dive into why Canada's economy is so uncompetitive you have to look at its constitutional framework. We have the fewest number of dwelling per capita in the G7 in the highest population growth in the G7. This is a recipe for a housing shortage which ensures that a lot of capital will flow into the housing sector simply because it offers promising returns relative to the risk of operating a business. I believe Canada grew by over 1,000,000 residents in 2022 however we had 240,000 housing starts (4 residents per dwelling) and average house size here is 2.51 residents per dwelling. \n\nThat disconnect between housing starts (see regulatory framework above as to why we can't build enough houses) will just cause more capital to flow to the sectors making the business investment environment worse.

The town I live in and grew up in when I was in school. We only had one campus, now here we are 18 years later and my one high school now has 4 different campuses to compensate for the amount of illegals that have overtaken my town. My friend is from Mexico who came to the US legally and has been a border officer for many years now. He has a very hard time telling Mexican migrants that they cannot enter the US illegally. But the law is law and it is the same if you enter Mexico. It's just a matter of Mexico doesn't have many opportunities for jobs that pays well and it's a better life in the US. I grew up with migrants all of my life. They worked 3 jobs for many hours per day but would rather have that than go back to Mexico - with no job. If Mexico had a flourishing economy, I feel migration isn't an issue. But then there's history - California belongs to Mexico but someone sold it to the Americans long ago.

Biggest difference USA has was more places to live every variety of climate you could ask for. It has way more opportunity because of the higher population. Way more jobs, way more national parks. They're extremely similar countries but I have to give it to the US is the variety of places to live. Canada may be bigger but most of it is a desolate wasteland. The only nice places to live in Canada are cities directly on the border. As far as how nice people are Canadians are just polite not always genuine. If an American is nice to you odds are they actually like you or they're someone you can't trust. But generally if a Canadian in nice to you they could hate your guts. An American seeing how Canadians act gives them a idolized view of who we are. If an American doesn't like you you'll know it and if they do like you you'll know it. This is the perspective of someone who grew up on a border town.

Was born in Canada in the 50’s and grew up in a predominately immigrant area in Montreal. My father came in 1928 and my friend’s parents came just after WWII. They came with NOTHING and didn’t expect anything. There were no English classes offered to new immigrants nor free health care. All of children made a success. The cold winters were fun as we skated, skied, etc… Mind you it was hard for our parents in the beginning as life isn’t always a bed of roses but we grew up in a peaceful country.

My family immigrated to Ontario more\nThan 30 years ago , where the cost of living was manageable and health care was excellent, minimum wage was $6/ hr but you can still save and buy a house in Ontario. Cost of living increases yearly while income stays relatively the same. Post pandemic the cost of living is outrageous, particularly now in Nova Scotia. The last province where you could buy your dream home on the beach/ocean for 80K-200K. Now it’s impossible to fine affordable housing so people are forced to live in shares accommodation in tiny apartments / home. The highest tax on your income and plus taxes on goods/services. \n\nI also agree on the depression and loneliness and boredom … you do have to put effort if you want a social life. \n\nHaving said this, living in small rural towns is very peaceful if you want to live a low key life and just be with nature. \n\nOn the plus side. The summer here is short but very beautiful with long daylight (sunrise at 6am and sunset at 9:30-10pm depending where you live). \n\nWinter is the hardest if you are a tropical kinda person who loves the sun and heat. Best solution is to stay in Canada for summer and live elsewhere in the winter.

Gotta' say, tap water is definitely one of those things that'll differ. Pretty sure that, where I grew up in WA, our tap water was bomb. Certainly I've lived in some other places in the states where that was not the case. It really depends.

As someone from Belgium that now lives in Columbus OH because of marriage, you're spot on with everything. Safety? Limited. Sprawl? Terrible. Rent? Eh it's not that bad. I make a base salary of $82.5k and my wife makes $50k. Our 2br 1ba apartment's rent is about $1000. It's a nice place, but it has some flaws. Our next place will be around $1500. I've told my wife I don't like the sprawl and lack of public transport here and I want to move to a place where that is less of an issue: Chicago, NYC or Boston. However, the latter two have crazy high rent.\n\nI must add, the terribly unsupported public education system in Columbus is by far the worst reason. My wife is a teacher at a Columbus City School that's almost 100% black. White families put their kids through private schools. The rest of the kids have terrible home lives and are therefore incredibly ill-behaved and under-educated. So much so that the teachers just CANNOT keep up with Ohio's learning standards. By the time these kids graduate (and that's a big IF), they would have learned about 20% of what a regular 18-year old would have learned in most of the world. This is in part due to:\n1. Parents that do not involve themselves in what their children do, and therefore do not discipline appropriately.\n2. Terrible school admins that force teachers to lower their standards to have a high passing rate for the school (otherwise it gets shut down). Also, due to the No Child Left Behind Act, admins also force teachers to teach how to pass state tests (repetitive bullshit) instead of important learning materials and/or critical thinking skills.\n3. A lot of these students are pushed into the gang lifestyle and see no future in their education. They don't even try.\n4. Burned out teachers that grew tired of the negative ROI and start giving out poor and inadequate work packets. However, I don't like blaming teachers, especially because my wife is the hardest working person I know.\n\nIt's hard to see my wife come back every day, exhausted. It pains me both for her and her kids. America doesn't give a fuck about education. The big theory is that they're purposely not giving public schools attention so they can be phased out and private education becomes the norm. And if you can't afford it? That's great, we need factory workers.\n\n\nI might convince my wife to move to Europe eventually (luckily a European marriage visa isn't as stupidly hard to obtain as it was for me to get here). Having kids in America is not something I'd like to think about. For now, I'm taking advantage of this high salary to save as much as I can and focus on advancing in my career. Unfortunately for some people it doesn't work out for whatever reason usually because they do not want to assimilate very well. I grew up in Ontario to a french-canadian father and an Italian mother in my life in Canada was so perfect said if I had to dream up a better life I could not have done so. I grew up playing all the sports and enjoyed all the different sports and the changes of seasons. My parents had a summer home on the st-lawrence river and every summer we water-ski swam fished, play golf in the morning and barbecues every night right on the water. Even though my grandfather was in the hotel business I was all about sports and enjoying everything about it. I grew up in a town of about 50 thousand about 40 miles from Montreal. When I wanted some great nightlife just drove a short drive to Montreal and it had everything did anyone could want in Nightlife. I have lived in United States for forty years and I can tell you that it really isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Heaven forbid should you get some kind of catastrophic illness you are screwed. I knew a woman who work for travelers insurance for 30 years at the best insurance a money could buy had suffered a couple of strokes and was on the verge of going broke had she not died when she died. People think that insurance continues to pay his long as you're ill and nothing could be further from the truth. This lady was going to have to sell her house to continue paying for round-the-clock care had she not died when she did. United States middle class is getting wiped out. I've seen enough poverty and hardship in this country to last a lifetime. I find greed to be running rampant in this country. When I grew up in Canada there was always the grass is greener on the other side and when I did move over to the other side the US that is I can tell you unequivocally the dead grass is not greener on the other side. There are more millions and millions of people here that are one or two paychecks away from being homeless. And we're talkin 2023. Now let's talk about violence. There is a mass murder in the United States every single day of the year. And a mass murder is defined by four or more people being killed by one person at one time. Killing these so out of control in the United States that now even six-year-olds are shooting their teacher. I find a tremendous amount of built-up Anger from people. Food is very expensive and shelter is also out of control and non affordable to most people. Again I find United States being able to paint a much Rosier picture then does really exist. And there are more con artists and thieves , Crooks, con-artists, bamboozlers, cheats and scammers then anywhere that I've ever been. And I will say this is it it ain't getting any better and I don't see it ever getting better. I find it is everybody out for themselves no matter who they cheat. I live in Southern California and I can tell you that night life where I live is non-existent. Understand that LA and Hollywood they always have to glamorize everything to sell it to tourists. Just remember that things today are not what they were 40 years ago. Middle-class people in Canada would also be just middle-class people in the US. But if your life means anything to you as far as safety and raising a family then Canada wins hands down end of discussion. People that say Canada is boring is because they are boring. That's what I found to be pretty standard across the board. Life is what you make of it. But I will say that you gals definitely need to move away if you don't like Canada. Do not let the door hit your ass on the way out. And just for your information Canada ranks annually as one of the top countries in the world to immigrate to. Canada is the second largest country in the world by land area and next to Saudi Arabia has the third largest oil Reserves in the world. Canada has huge amount of freshwater which most of the rest of the world seems to be lacking and having spent my Summers on the Saint Lawrence River one of the Great Rivers in this world. I wouldn't change my twenty years in Canada for anyplace else in this world and I will be moving back shortly.

I know it's not 100% safe in Canada. I've watched Murdoch Mysteries! ???\n\nYeah, when I moved to a city city, I saw the segregation. I grew up in a small town. I was friends with everyone. We didn't have a lot Indians and Africans though sadly. In school, with the exception of Asians, unless you're going by specific country, there was a token (poc) for each ethnicity in all the classes until roughly Junior high. So sad. We got rid of segregation in the south, but we didn't get rid of segregation in the country.

On the point of the nonmixing demographics, I've completely noticed and think it's really odd about the US. I grew up in Houston, and so far it's the place in the US I've witnessed actual mixing of demographics. Everywhere else feels and looks extremely segregated which is really sad. When I went to NYC was when I truly noticed the living together but segregated and cannot stop seeing it anywhere I go other than Houston. Hell even the restaurants had 1 demographic working inside really hammering it down. \nI also gotta with Aba, i hate the nonmixing most areas do. Different food. \nI've been here 27 years and grew up in Louisiana before that.\nCulturally very similar but I came here as an adult and see it far different than where I grew up as a kid.

I grew up in the Bay Area, CA, and I moved away 12 years ago to NC. Best decision ever. I miss the west coast because the views are world class (the drive up and down highway 1 is just breathtaking), but I can afford multiple homes where I am, and I'm not rural. Just live in a suburb right outside of a major city. I can afford to raise a family, send kids to private school. I can afford vacations....I can afford to live! It's also why I am not liberal anymore. After moving from a Democrat controlled area to a mostly Republican controlled area, I converted. Lower taxes, better cost of living, and less crime...It just makes sense. I'm also hispanic, and let me tell you, I appreciate the racism here! I know that sounds odd, but for one, there really isn't that much racism to deal with, but when it confronts you, you know it! It's not hiding behind some fake woke smile, it's blatant and obvious, and I'm good with that because I can just navigate around it vs constantly second guessing.

This describes my experience living in japan vs america. My biggest concern is now bringing my daughter back who has never lived in the states. I grew up in Chicago but she only knows SAFE Japan. And these fools making me move to north carolina at a base right next to the hood ?. You never realize how safe other places are until you move out of tne states. Even on their worst day, people running into schools and harming people just isnt normal in other places.

I've considered leaving the U.S. more this year than ever, even though I really do love it. With the inflation, politics, and lack of work life balance for anyone I don't think the place I grew up in will last. Tbh I've never considered Canada, the government overreach and propaganda there seem insane to me

I'm from Houston and I traveled around the US for my wife job and stuff. I would say Houston is the only city I seen with a true diversity in a neighborhood. The neighborhood I grew up with was filled with blacks, Hispanics, Asian, and Africans with a touch of whites. If I had to choose which race secluded themselves the most would be white ppl but I think it's a social economics reason more than race nowadays. Prettiest white girl I seen would be Tennessee, Latinas would be florida/texas/Cali, Caribbean would be NY area, black ladies are texas/lousiana/Georgia. Asian would be cali/texas. This is just from my taste and experiences tho.

Best water ive ever had came from my parents well in Wisconsin, they live out in the country. My wife was floored when she first tasted it, she grew up in Texas and i live there too but everytime i go to my parents i chug that shit right out of the tap.

I'm grew up north of Detroit and would play summer soccer leagues in London Ontario. So I always knew first hand how clean and chill it was. I took my wife to Toronto about 5 years ago. She's from Florida with family I Philly. It blew her mind how clean beautiful and safe it was. What she doesn't realize is how cold and boring it is.
