I've lived in Canada before - twice, and it changed drastically between those two times. These days, I wouldn't touch Canada with a ten foot pole. You may remember, I was living in Lviv, Ukraine — and then the invasion happened. That pushed me out; I have moved to Croatia. I found cheap rent on a 5 bedroom apartment — in a seaside city with a Mediterranean climate — and signed a 5 year lease. By now, I am more than 1.5 years into living in Croatia. (And, Croatia developed a reputation like Sweden, for very little Covid restrictions. So I have 1.5 years living with no medical questions, no mandates, no masks, and no vaccine passports. Outside of Sweden and Croatia, the rest of Europe is less interesting, because of how they were during Covid.)

This is profoundly unfair review and comparison. How many in Nigeria receiving $1000/month salary? When did “time is money” became unacceptable? Maybe that’s one of the reasons the country not prospering because many are lazy and don’t perform their job? Where in this world the system pays you more money than you can handle? Why not give a specific example of that “systemic discrimination/racism”. Why is wanting to know your performance at work discriminatory? Why not be honest that there’s different approach to healthcare professionals in Canada? My question is why he’s not going back to Nigeria? People that are doing VERY WELL in Nigeria don’t ever think of leaving the country. They send their kids to study abroad and pay huge for that. We’ve been in Canada for over 10yrs now and no regrets.

Our current crises here in Canada are largely due to recent, unreasonable immigration targets. I'm not anti-immigration - we need immigration - but some questions need to be asked. 1. Are newcomers actually being matched to the areas in which we have labour shortages? The short answer is NO. 2. Would it not be more sensible to increase immigration in ratio to our ability to build new housing? Instead of the total disconnect we have now. Especially if many of the newcomers aren't actually being employed in construction industries? 3. We've had labour shortages and housing bubble issues for over a decade at least; how did the labour shortage crisis and housing crisis suddenly get so bad? Short answer: they didn't. Unreasonable immigration took a shaky situation and pushed it over into crisis almost overnight. 4. Most of our universities and colleges are now relying on international student fees to meet their budgets. Most of them are now operating as businesses, including property developers, instead of educational institutions. (I'm a university prof - 20+ years teaching - I can't believe the changes I've seen in our postsecondary system .) Who is tracking the number of international students who are here 4 plus years and apply for PR after graduation? What is happening with the manipulation of statistics re: international students and/vs immigration? There is a significant statistical overlap that is not being disclosed to the Canadian public. Comments from a Canadian. Homeless people are generally concentrated in the larger cities but in the past few years it has become a real problem. It is a real problem for the people when the temperature drops to -30C. Mental wellness is a huge issue. The racism issue is mainly against the indigenous. The doctor migration to the US is a money thing, not better conditions. Getting a family doctor is easy in some places and difficult in others, generally in rural communities. Getting a reference to a specialist is not an issue and I believe this may be a doctor specific issue. If your GP does not refer you, ER will take care of you. The issue with referrals is the triage system that may result in a longer wait to see the specialist. This is in contrast to the US where one can see a specialist very quickly, if one has insurance. In Canada, every citizen and legal resident has the ability to receive medical care as covered by the provincial medical systems which differs from province to province. Many doctors are now offering online communication with your GP and specialist. Your finance comments are inaccurate. There are 5 nation wide banks but there are also nation wide credit unions and provincial banks which in my opinion these tend to offer better service than the big 5 (exclude National Bank, which is big bank but more investment focused). Cell carrier monopolies is a real issue. Cell carriers are recently offering unlimited data, no long distance to the US, etc. Other countries have a definite advantage here. The government has enabled conditions for a new carrier a few times but eventually, these smaller carriers get swallowed up by the big national carriers. More recently Rogers bought out Shaw which limits our choices further. Sales tax is not always 10-15%. In Alberta the sales tax is 5%. Passing courses and evaluations ensures there are standards which is a good thing. Would you want a Civil Engineer designing a road or bridge that is not suitable for the climate? How about a doctor with questionable credentials? Agree with your recommendations for hiring. It is expensive to hire and train a new employee but can be much more expensive to fire an employee. Agree with the housing crisis comments and the reasons. Getting an absent owner to fix a property? This is crazy inaccurate. Multi-dwelling properties have property managers paid to look after the properties regardless of who owns it. While on the average, foreign investment may not seem to contribute to property prices, this is not the case when looking a the local sectors of the big two - Toronto and Vancouver. There was a case in Vancouver where a property with a shack sold for over $1MM. This is not because the house price was unrealistic, but because of the property location and perceived property value. This is a direct result of foreign investment in houses in the Vancouver area resulting in a lack of properties. Many of these foreign owned single family investment properties remain empty most of the year. Another big issue in many Canadian municipalities is the lack of building code enforcement. The laws are in place but not always enforced.

While returning from a trip to Europe in the late '90s, I came across an article praising the city of Houston, Texas, destined for a promising future, the choice of many immigrants who settled there. As my father was an American citizen, I thought it would be easy for me to settle there, to earn my living there as a career French teacher, given that the article in question mentioning openings in this domain. I went there to assess the situation. I had a few fruitless interviews with schools looking for a French teacher, because in Texas, the education system is denominational, and I am a non-practicing Christian.\n\nMoreover, the reception of the hotel where I was staying forbade me to go out at night if I wanted to return home safe and alive. Indeed, the article did not mention the high crime rate in Houston and that many people were armed. In fact, posters on public transport warned passengers to hide their weapons in plain sight. This was enough to convince me that I had to stay in Canada, even if the country is not perfect.

Canada's immigration system is transparent and easy to access. Even whom could get to the minimal level understand the points to improve and may try again. The only question mark in my opinion is to limit some very populated countries like the USA does. We see entire neighbourhoods with the same immigrants, and they become a mini-whatever place they come from and not Canadians.

I’m with my fellow Canadians, I’ll visit the US (although even then, it’s beginning to look less and less ideal) but over my dead body would I live there. \nThe fact you have become desensitized and don’t discuss school shootings is baffling. 4 or 5 years ago, there was a shooting where I live in Canada. The whole city was on lock down. I believe one elderly woman died, and 3 were injured. The person was caught, arrested, and is rotting away in jail. It hasn’t happened since. People still remember it. My little sister and I were scared, so we hid in my bedrooms closet. (It was on the second floor, and there was no way anybody could break in and get up there easily.)\n\nHealthcare is a huge issue. My family has a long line of health issues, and with that in mind, the risk is just to obscene.\n\nI am a woman. The fact that laws are being stripped away from us by old white men who have no idea what it is like to be a woman in the states is horrifying. \n\nGun culture. For all the amazing things the US has to offer, right now we don't even want to visit there, let alone move there. We've talked about it a lot, but nope. In Canada, generally speaking (although there are exceptions to every rule) we have no idea what political leaning our neighbors favor. Political campaigns last no more than 51 days; they do not start the day after the last election and go on for years. This way, elected officials actually do some work instead of campaigning. Right now, the politics in the US, as well as the judiciary, are literally insane. Gun violence in the US is insane, as is the attitude towards guns. It shouldn't take a shooting that affects you personally to make you care about it, and it's not just at schools. The US has had 28 mass killings, with 140 victims, in 6 months... but the problem is that no one down there cares about that enough to stop it, or even discuss ways to stop it. The politics is so sold out to corporations that what is good for the people just doesn't matter. It is capitalism run amok. Environmental protections? They are an inconvenience, and most of them were rolled back a few years ago under the presidency of He Who Must Not Be Named. So politics, elections, shootings... but wait. There's more. I have a wonderful friend in the US who has amazing health care, and yet when he got cancer, he was screwed. We do pay a health care premium up here, but it is a drop in the bucket compared to what people in the US pay for private insurance. Yes, you have the best hospitals in the world, but it doesn't matter if you can't afford to walk in the door. Now dump the intolerance -- racism, homophobia, religious zealots, misogyny (yes, I am talking women's rights, equal pay, access to health care, etc) -- throw in the crazies with guns, and now ask the question again. I absolutely know that Canada is not perfect, and that the tolerances and attitudes towards all these subjects differs from region to region, but overall we are a country that tries to respect the rights and needs of others, that has empathy for others, that wants to help others, and that is a pretty firm foundation to make us want to stay here. (please don't interpret this as all Americans and all areas of the US have no respect etc... but the predominant issues of health care, politics, religion, corporate greed, and violence, now all supported by a bat-crap crazy SCOTUS, sadly spills and taints it all. Well, as a Canadian, I guess i'll pitch in.\nWould I move to the US? The short answer is no. But I will explain more in detail.\n\nFirst, I do not see any advantages to the US compared to Canada. Americams often tout their country as the beacon of freedom and the land of opportunities, but I don't feel that Canada is so different there. We're actually higher on the world freedom index, and its not like our economy was in shambles and everyone dirt poor... We pay more taxes, fine, but we also get more services in return, and that last part has the advantage to remove a big layer of worry. Like, for healthcare, I don't have to worry if i'm covered by insurance or not, or if the insurance carrier will drop me on some technicality. I'm a citizen. All the basic needs are covered; no questions asked (and the healthcare quality is not half bad. We just prioritize urgent cases over non-urgent; so if you go to the hospital for something non-urgent, you will wait, and more urgent cases will pass before you. Annoying when it happens, but I understand and agree with that in the end)\n\nSecond, I do see a lot of disadvantages. All the points raised in the video are valid, from the private-sector healthcare system, the gun control laws (or lack thereof), the social policies and legislation in some states; they don't agree with me.\n\nI think it comes down to some specific social and cultural ideas that are prevalent or at least present in a substantial manner in the american society. Bear in mind that I am generalizing here, not every american believes these points, but many do. I've seen a poll somewhere where 48% of americans were AGAINST the separation of church and state. For me thats not only insane, its dangerous. It fits the individualistic mentality where people can more easily start thinking that their way is THE way. I'd much rather stay in Canada where i don't have to worry if I get sick or hurt, if some agressive drunk idiot in a bar is armed, or if some fundamentalists from some religious congregation is gonna be able to try to politically force their point of view.

I went to a conference in the US for training in body language, influence, and persuasion. We were able to meet with the presenters in small groups to ask questions. One of the attendees asked for body language indications that someone had a concealed weapon. After the answer, I said to the person who asked the question that I was glad I didn’t need to know how to look for concealed weapons because I’m from Canada. She looked at me in shock and said I really needed to know that. I emphatically responded, “No, I don’t need to know that because I’m from Canada.” She looked at me like I was the most naive and clueless person she’d ever met and walked away. I felt sad that Americans have to be so worried about guns that she thought that was absolutely essential knowledge. Quite frankly, I don’t even know what the answer was to her question since I totally tuned out because I knew I’d never need that information!

Hey Tyler...ask the question in reverse...see how many Americans would move to Canada....and I have a question for you, Why should I have to make a choice where I live, directly in response to gun violence and mass shootings, lousy uber expensive health care , discrimination, racism, bigotry, and hatred?...like I said in my 1st post, I lived in Cali. and Arkansas in the mid 80's, as different as environments can be...yet all of the same issues, just some more pronounced than others ( surprisingly, I saw and HEARD a lot more racism in Southern California than I did in Arkansas)....but now, in the 21st Century, the fact that politicians are actively trying (and in a lot of cases succeeding) to return the U.S. to the 1900 ( taking the vote away from minorities, especially blacks and native Americans), making women bend the knee to what men say and want them to do ( the reversal of Roe v Wade, 100% total bans on reproductive rights, and the restrictive, totalitarian, Nazi/fascist bans on the rights to choose who you want to be, how you want to be addressed, LGBTQ people and lifestyles) when I see this, hear the right-wing racist, elitist,MAGA, B.S., I wonder how ANY people in their right minds could want to live in 2023 America, the Land of the Lost !

No question there are many things thatAmericans can enjoy that are not available for Canadians. For one, the variety of consumer goods is more plentiful due to the size of your population. Our population is one tenth of the U.S. so the consumer market is much smaller. Having lived in the US for a dozen years, I missed so many things about Canada. Now living back here I appreciate our universal health care and the fact that everyone isn’t walking around with a weapon. Those were the two things that really bothered me about the US. I had a great job and worked with great people and we continue to be friends. And now the political climate in the US is teetering on absolute chaos. ????

Lack of affordable housing -- lack of housing in general -- is the main reason people already living here are being priced out and why so many refugees and immigrants cannot afford the cost when they move here. When these people come to Canada for a better life and/or to escape the suffering that they were living in, they cannot bring their homes with them. It is the government's responsibility at all levels to ensure that these newcomers have a place to go when they come here. A homeless shelter should not be the answer. Buy up office spaces and convert them (if safe to do so with whatever codes need to be met) into affordable housing units. For years we've been seeing hundreds of news articles about vacancies in office buildings being at all time highs, yet only a handful of them are being converted. 500,000 people a year entering a country where there isn't enough housing for them (let alone the people living here already) is irresponsible on the government's part. If this is your pledge, at least give these people a better life and not send them to shelters or onto the streets as soon as they arrive. If Canada is to truly be a safe haven for immigrants and refugees escaping their hardships, it's paramount that the government does what it can to make these people actually feel like their life will change for the better. I'm all for immigration since it helps the economy and knowing that Canada can put people in a better position for themselves and their families, but it's the lack of preparation from the governments that makes me question their pledge in this way.

I agree with each and everything that both the ladies have said. I am 52 and have spent beautiful 25 yrs in Qatar. Since my children wanted to settle in USA I am in US now. However I have a question for Smita ji since both her children are in Canada now who will take care of her and her husband once they are too old to travel. Also after 15 years the children will be busy with higher education of grandchildren. The friends and maids that are a source of happiness in good health won't be of use because they will also be old and suffering.

No, they do bring up questions such as where are you from and you respond to them then they ask you where are you from originally, they are very nosi and by many means want to find answers for their curiosity, in Toronto no one even do eye contact let alone to be friendly or socializing, if someone approaches you is not out of friendliness, it's out of their curiosity and finding out information about you. Many quit and students are losing interest—medicine won’t pay enough anymore to justify $500K in loans.\n\nWe could repeal every bit of Obamacare tomorrow and still not be able to fix it. The leviathan grew tentacles that released toxins into every nook and cranny of the system. Now that they have buried themselves in critical layers, it would be impossible to yank them out.\n\nI have a good PCP who is booked 6-8 weeks out. Specialists? Hah. GI, neuro, and derm? Pre election, head hunters were shaking the trees to find job candidates.\n\nOur unemployment is up as are our taxes with the stomping out of the tax cuts. \n\nDespite the endless sloganeering about how the Trump tax cuts only benefited “rich” people, it’s quite the opposite.\n\nHigh earners lost their pet deductions and lower income taxpayers were quite pleasantly surprised when they did their returns. The cuts were targeted to preserve wealth for the middle and lower classes.\n\nI could go on for another 100 pages but you get the idea and I get crabby writing for free.\n\nI will leave you with the caution that it’s best if you doubt and question any data and any stats coming from our government. Those are seldom legit. If the data comes from a study, always look to see who paid for it. And how large the sample size was; how were the participants selected? You are overgeneralising when it comes to some sections of your healthcare segment. I work in the field in both rural Alberta and British Columbia and most of what you are saying is not the norm.  \n\nYou present two isolated cases of clearly questionable medical experiences. I don't know where you're from, but you will find good and bad doctors (as for any occupation in life frankly), anywhere - it is saddening that you are presenting this and viewers who are not clued up on the facts could interpret this as the norm.  \n\nFurthermore, communicating with your physician via email is considered to be not secure and private and physicians can get into malpractice issues for doing so. On the other hand, there are a number of secure patient communication platforms approved by the health ministries. With that being said, the adoption of the technology lies with individual physicians. There are success stories from the most rural parts of Canada where this is embraced. You are, once again, speaking very broadly which could be interpreted incorrectly as the norm. \n\nTo summarise: Yes, waitlists for doctors are long, but that is about the only universal truth in your segment. Calling up a few friends is certainly not research - a term that is used way too easily by creators and too easily accepted by their audiences.
